Matcha
Authentic Japanese Matcha from Uji, Kyoto.

Sourced from Uji, Kyoto, our Japanese matcha comes from a single family estate, now in its fourth generation. The craft of tea making is passed down through generations: weeks before harvest, the leaves are shaded—a traditional process that concentrates chlorophyll and L-theanine, giving rise to tencha, the leaf from which matcha is made. Slow-ground on granite stone mills, the process preserves the rich umami taste, vibrant green hue, and fine texture without overheating the leaf.

Our collection brings together select cultivars crafted for distinct flavor profiles: ceremonial grade matcha, intended for the pure tea ritual—usucha and koicha—and latte grade blends, tailored for milk pairings and smoothies. Every variety preserves the signature balance of subtle sweetness, gentle astringency, and deep umami expected of premium-grade matcha.

The Greenglass Matcha project was born with a single purpose: to bring matcha to the local market at the very same standard found in the most esteemed tea houses of Uji, Kyoto.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Ceremonial, High Ceremonial, and Latte Grade Matcha?

High Ceremonial Matcha is crafted by chashi—master tea artisans with decades of expertise—and is a blend of premium cultivars such as Samidori, Asahi, Okumidori, and Uji Hikari. It is the highest grade in our collection, recommended for traditional tea prepared pure, without milk or sweetener. Select lots have been awarded top honors both in Japan and at the international Japanese Tea Selection Paris competition.

Ceremonial Matcha comes from the year’s first harvest, made from leaves shaded before picking and slow-ground on granite mills to preserve its color, aroma, and nutritional profile. It is ideal for daily enjoyment, prepared as usucha or koicha.

Latte Grade Matcha is a blend of first and second harvests, specifically crafted for milk-based drinks—its more robust profile cuts through foam and dairy, holding its vibrant green color and balanced flavor.

Which grade of matcha should I choose if I want to make a latte at home?

We recommend our ceremonial grades—such as Miyabi, Ginsen, or Tsuru-no-Mukashi—which offer a fine balance of flavor and vibrant color even when paired with milk. However, for a drink specifically crafted for lattes, we suggest Gokumukashi. Designed explicitly for this style of preparation, this blend maintains its rich intensity and bold green hue even when combined with milk or plant-based alternatives. Check out our recipes for hot matcha latte and iced matcha latte.

Can I use ceremonial grade matcha for cooking or smoothies?

It is not necessarily a mistake, but you are effectively paying extra for subtle flavor nuances, specific cultivars, and single-harvest characteristics that get lost when exposed to heat or mixed with heavy ingredients. For baking, desserts, smoothies, and recipes, we recommend Culinary Grade Matcha—a higher-intensity powder built to withstand cooking temperatures and blend seamlessly into recipes, offering the ideal balance of quality and value for this type of use.

Why is matcha from Uji, Kyoto considered superior?

Uji has been recognized for over 800 years as the source of the world's finest Japanese green tea. The distinct climate, morning fog, and mineral-rich soil of the region create unique conditions for leaf development—conditions that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else.

How much matcha and what water temperature should I use for preparation?

Add 2 grams of matcha into a small amount of water (about 50 ml, at ~75°C), sift through a fine sieve for a smooth texture, then whisk vigorously with an electric frother or chasen (bamboo whisk) until a layer of foam forms on the surface.

How do I keep matcha powder fresh after opening?

We recommend consuming the powder within one month of opening. Store it in an opaque, airtight container—ideally in the refrigerator—to protect its flavor and properties from light, moisture, and oxidation.

How long does delivery take?

Delivery takes 3–6 business days.
